Military foils bid to seize Gombi in Adamawa

A fresh attempt by Boko Haram to seize Gombi town in
Adamawa State was repelled yesterday by a joint military and
vigilance groups. Although sources claimed six people died at
Dzangola in the Gombi Local Government Area and three at
Dabua in Hong local Government Area and several houses,
including churches burnt, but the Joint Task Force (JTF)
frustrated the insurgents’ attempt to seize the two towns.
The sources also indicated that the insurgents struck on
Sunday night, shooting sporadically and in the process, a
soldier and a woman lost their lives, while another source
alleged that six persons died in the gun duel.
An eyewitness also told Daily Sun in Yola that the attempt by
the insurgents met a stiff resistance as the troops engaged
them in a fierce gun duel that lasted for some hours.
The terrorists were said to have attacked the town from Biu –
Garkida axis which connects Sambisa forest and the hilly Lala
axis which links with the boundary with Borno and Gombe
states.
“The insurgents stormed that town and were shouting Allahu
Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, meaning Allah is the
greatest”, an eyewitness said.
A woman who escaped and pleaded not to be named, said the
attackers took securitymen unawares as residents fled.
