President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday received the Super Falcons, who won the African Women Football Nations Cup in Namibia last week at the Council Chambers, saying discipline and patriotism played a key role in their victory.
He promised to host the Super Falcons to a special dinner on November 5th, to enable the nation honour them for their outstanding performance. In a short ceremony shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the president, who was presented with the trophy, commended the players for combining their skills with discipline, which have consistently earned them trophies, as well as for making Nigeria proud. He urged all footballers to imbibe the virtue of discipline as without it, they could not achieve much both in sports and other ventures. “Today we are quite pleased to receive the cup from you. You have made the country proud. Nigeria is known to be a soccer country. The male teams have been doing very well. But because of certain internal crisis, we tend to lag behind. But the female teams have been doing wonderfully well.
We thank you for your commitment because it requires discipline to achieve this height. No matter how good you are, even in the academics, you see brilliant boys and girls, who ordinarily would have made first-class but because of lack of discipline, they don’t make it. So, if there is no discipline, you cannot excel in anything. You have the skills but you have also shown discipline that made you excel. We will continue to respect you.” Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, in his remarks stated: “we bring you good tidings from Namibia; the legendary good luck has continued to follow us.”
He disclosed to the president that the discipline, dedication, passion and patriotism displayed by the Falcons during the tournament was unequalled.
